Garmin Forerunner 225 On Sale, $189 at Amazon

Well, well, well. It seems Amazon has come back around after a few long weeks of binge-selling over the holidays. It’s okay, we understand…we’ve been there ourselves. Today, Amazon has a great deal on the Garmin Forerunner 225. The last time we saw a great deal on a Garmin watch was around the end of November with a $100 price cut on the Garmin Fenix 3 models. Of course we found out why at CES when Garmin introduced newer models with the built-in heart rate monitor.

It’s hard keeping up with the Jones’.

For those of us in the market for a new GPs watch, look no further than the Garmin Forerunner 225. This is a great watch for the new, novice or even budget runner. For under $200 you get both GPS and optical heart rate monitor (like the Microsoft Band or Apple Watch). Seriously, this is a steal.

The Details

I would consider Garmin as the premier source of GPS watches. Their Forerunner series is almost legendary for the most part. I have yet to find a runner that hasn’t had one of the Garmin GPS watches at the top of their list. They last both in battery life and durability; made for an athlete.

  • WRIST-BASED HEART RATE – Run without a strap – the Forerunner 225 uses a built-in sensor to measure heart rate at the wrist
  • GRAPHIC INTERFACE – A colorful gauge shows your zone at a glance: warm-up (gray), easy (blue), aerobic (green), threshold (orange) or maximum (red).
  • GPS – GPS-enabled, Forerunner 225 provides accurate distance and pace data. You can also view your run on a map when you upload to Garmin Connect.
  • ACCELEROMETER – A built-in accelerometer provides distance and pace data when you’re running indoors, with no need for a separate foot pod
  • ACTIVITY TRACKING – It doubles as a watch and activity tracker. Count steps, calories and distance throughout the day. The move bar with vibration alert motivates you to move when you’ve been sitting too long. (sleep monitoring as well)
  • Unit Dimensions WxHxD : 11.3″ x 1.9″ x 0.6″ (287 mm x 48 mm x 16 mm
  • Color is black with red accent

Old School Is the New School

Keep in mind that this watch is the 2015 version. That’s a good thing. There is a new version properly named the Garmin Forerunner 235. My experience has been that you don’t need to necessarily purchase a new watch every year as the upgrades are incremental if they are within 1-2 years of each other. For example, the time between the Forerunner 910 and 920 was long enough to completely redesign and add many features. I am sure that the difference between the 920 and the 930 will be slight changes and the addition of the optical heart rate sensor (OHR). This is what happened to the Fenix 3. The next iteration just gained different colors, bands and the OHR.

My advice, always look to save your money and buy on sale. Oh, look at that, it’s on sale! If you are in the market for a entry-level, quality running watch, the Garmin Forerunner 225 is for you.
